Course Description:

The below NRA FIRST STEPS SHOTGUN course description comes from the NRA website (http://www.nrainstructors.org/CourseCatalog.aspx).

“NRA FIRST Steps Shotgun course is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific shotgun model. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific model shotgun at a moving target. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular shotgun model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the shotgun; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.”

Background:

This class is ideal for a person who is new to shotgun ownership or is considering buying a shotgun.  We tailor this class to people that have never held a shotgun before and may even have some hesitation towards shooting.  This is good for families that a gun may be brought into the household soon and they want to ensure that everyone remains safe.

Students will be instructed how to safely operate a shotgun, safely store the firearm, and how a firearm works.  NCRR provides NRA FIRST STEPS Shotgun classes to the public as a public service.  The instructors are volunteers and are not paid.  Fees cover materials and general expenses.  Classes are typically offered as interest is expressed.  Class begins at 9:00AM.  NCRR provides NRA Certified Shotgun Instructors and NRA First Steps Shotgun training materials.

What do students need to bring?

The class is setup to provide general introduction to shotgun shooting so the club provides everything for a student to learn.  If a student has their own equipment however they are encouraged to bring it.

Suggested equipment to bring if owned would be:

–       12 – 20 gauge Shotgun (with Owner’s Manual if available). The firearm should be UNLOADED and in a case when you bring it into the club.  Do not handle your firearm until told to do so by the instructor.

–       If you have ammunition only shotsize 7-1/2, 8 or 9 is allowed

–       Ear protection

–       Eye protection

What do students receive?

An NRA certificate of completion is awarded at the end of the class.

Length of the Class:

Typical classes are four hours long.  The length of time is dependent on the number of questions students ask.

Cost:

The cost of the class is $55 per person for Non-NCRR members and $45 per NCRR member.  Payment can be made by personal check or cash.
