Juniors

Our Junior Rifle Club teaches International 3 position smallbore, air rifle, and air pistol for teenage girls and boys. The Junior Club is run under the auspices of Rob Miller and is open to all youngsters between the ages of 13 and 21. Meetings are on Monday evenings during the school year between 5 P.M. and 8 P.M. A junior may participate for as little as $35 per year. Our juniors often attend and participate in area rifle and pistol matches. The experience gained in participation in these matches, coupled with the skills learned at the club, build on our Juniors abilities and knowledge of the shooting sports.

NCRR, as an NRA affiliated club, is open to all juniors and does not discriminate based on sex, race, or religion. NCRR is also affiliated with the Director of Civilian Marksmanship and have available several quality .22 caliber rifles obtained under this program for the juniors to use in training. Parents who would like their children to participate in this program but do not have a .22 rifle need not worry. The OCMP has a program that will make good quality .22 rifles available at moderate cost, in addition to those that the club provides for their use during meetings and competition.

In 1997, the NCRR juniors took 2nd and 3rd place juniors in the Virginia State 3 position Smallbore Championship at Quantico Va. We at NCRR have been fortunate to have several juniors go on to college varsity teams. Two of our Juniors, whom we consider the best, Mary and Heather who started under the NCRR Junior Program, trained elsewhere for most of their training. NCRR did continue to provide equipment and financial support, as well as coaching and encouragement by long distance and mail. Mary Elsass and Heather O'Hara did make All American teams. While we cannot take all the credit for their successes, we are extremely proud of their accomplishments.

All-Americans participate in one of three disciplines: Free pistol, standard pistol, and air pistol. Shooters are selected from among full-time, undergraduate students based on season average scores, frequency of competition, performance in specific competitions, grade poing average, and good sportsmanship. We are especially proud that that Mary and Heather got their start here at NCRR.

Another junior, Don Truax, won the Silver medal at the American Legion Air Rifle Championships in Colorado Springs last year. Don was sponsored by NCRR and we are very proud of his accomplishments.

NCRR also has a Trap program that is open to the juniors to introduce them to this exciting sport. Much success has been experienced with this program and we are pleased with the turnout of young people. Their participation increases each year and is a great experience and opportunity to learn more about the shooting sports.
